The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) fears that internationally outlawed child labor will increase significantly worldwide. Estimates suggest that the economic consequences of the CoV pandemic could push nine million more girls and boys into child labor by the end of this year, UNICEF said.
According to the data, 160 million children are already working instead of attending school. According to the data – the number has increased by 8.4 million from 2016 to 2020.
“Time is pressing”
“Time is of the essence: The goal of the global community to eliminate child labor by 2025 will become a distant prospect if we do not take massive countermeasures now,” said UNICEF Germany Executive Director Christian Schneider.
The increase includes global economic turmoil, which also leads to lower wages. “Good working conditions for parents, sufficient pay, and health and safety measures in companies, on the other hand, help to reduce child labor,” it said. June 12 was proclaimed World Day Against Child Labor.
The rights guaranteed to children worldwide are set out in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. According to it, every child has, among other things, the right to life, health care, education, and protection from violence and exploitation.
